Earlier this summer, my fiance and I traveled down to Florida for a much needed vacation. We are both college students, so finding the Lowest Airfares Online was a MUST!
By searching and comparing deals online, we were able to find a pretty reasonable rate for a major airline. Unfortunately the trade offs for the lowest airfares online are odd departure times and multiple connections and layovers.
We had to leave from Detroit at five in the morning, with stops in Atlanta and finally arrived in Tampa in the early afternoon. By the time we reached our destination, most of the day was gone and we wished we'd had a little more money to take the direct flights.
As first time fliers, the process at the airport was relatively easy. We were able to print our itineraries online and take them to the automated kiosks at the terminals. From there, we were able to check in electronically and print our boarding passes.
The main hassle was the security line, as they were much more strict on the items that we could and could not bring aboard the airplane. Fortunately for us, we were departing so early in the morning that there was not much of a line. Once on the plane, we passed the time by doing crossword puzzles and playing portable electronic game devices and listening to our MP3 players.
Since we had more time than money, finding the lowest airfares online was worth the early departure and long layover.

Bargain Airfare was not a Bargain
After getting myself and family to Florida from North Carolina for a five day vacation with bargain airfare, I found myself wishing we had just stayed home or gone camping an hour away at Green Mountain.
We arrived at the airport and stood in a long line at the check-in counter. While in line, we were re-directed to the kiosk to get our boarding passes. It was a bit of a hassle, but so far, so good.
After our first flight, we had a 2 1/2 hour layover in Charlotte. I have three children ages from ten to sixteen. I purchased bargain airfare to save money even though there was a long layover. I didn't realize to pass the time during the layover, the kids would go to to Dunkin' Donuts and buy soda and bagels, then go into the newsstand and buy a stack of gossip magazines. Or that I would want to buy a newspaper.
A half-hour before boarding, the departure board flashed that our flight was canceled. I approached the counter and was told that we would be re-directed to a flight that would leave in about 4 more hours.
